Well it seems like the entire world is stumbling towards the zombie apocalypse! Although there are still no cases in Myanmar (ha ha ha), government officials have forbidden any “large gatherings” (but have not defined what constitutes large) and cancelled all Thingyan celebrations in Yangon. Santa in Sri Lanka
We decided to spend our luxurious three week 2019 Christmas break in Sri Lanka. I had been there years before in about 2000 but not since. I remember the great birds, some great sites but terrible food. On that trip there was a week long part on the beach but this time we did no such thing travelling around the whole time. Like with our trip to Laos we probably packed a bit too much in but thoroughly enjoyed it regardless.

The audience for this post is not really our regular audience so feel free to give this one a miss. If however, you are interested in the birds of Yangon then I hope this will be useful. What follows is not an exhaustive list of every bird but simply every bird I have been able to identify so far. The region of Yangon is actually quite large and includes, for instance, Hlawga National Park however, I am not including birds I have seen there. This is really just for the city area of Yangon. I will try to keep it updated with new photos that I have taken and new birds as I discover them. For birders more expert than me (which is just about anyone) feel free to comment with corrections and missing species.

I can’t believe that it is 2020 and that we are nearly at the end of January! Seems crazy to me as it feels like I was just hoping to make it to Thanksgiving and all our holidays and now it’s nearly February. Continue reading “2020”
Retirement Practice (part 3)
Right – Rattlesnakes! Why the fever over rattlesnakes you may ask? You may have also noticed other comments about snakes in past posts. You probably know that I am a birder so why the sudden interest in snakes. Continue reading “Retirement Practice (part 3)”
Random Acts of Kindness
Before we arrived in Myanmar we were reading a few other blogs on living here and had read that you sometimes experienced random acts of kindness from the local Burmese people. Continue reading “Random Acts of Kindness”
Santas with Mantas
This Christmas break was our first big holiday since arriving at the school. A whopping three weeks! For the first part of the time we went to Indonesia scuba diving. Continue reading “Santas with Mantas”
Birding in Burma
This year Thanksgiving coincided with a Burmese national holiday called Tazaungdaing. This meant an extra day of school holiday than normal. We contemplated going to the beach and in retrospect that would probably have been a good choice considering Lindsey’s Dengue Fever but instead decided we would go on a short birding trip to see a bit of the country and for me to see a few birds. Continue reading “Birding in Burma”
Birthday Abroad
A couple of weeks ago we were driving past the local mall and I saw a big ‘Merry Christmas’ sign. My first thought was, ‘well that’s a bit early’, but then I realised that in fact it’s a perfectly normal time to be advertising Christmas and in fact in the UK it starts a lot earlier. Continue reading “Birthday Abroad”
Culture Chaos, Stickers and Skinks
One of the things that I imagine we will most about London is the access to cultural events. I can’t say that I miss that yet because we haven’t had time to miss anything really although Lindsey is starting to miss the cool October weather of London.
