Well it seems like the entire world is stumbling towards the zombie apocalypse! Although there are still no cases in Myanmar (ha ha ha), government officials have forbidden any “large gatherings” (but have not defined what constitutes large) and cancelled all Thingyan celebrations in Yangon. Long Weekends, Short Weekends
On Friday night our school had it’s annual fundraising gala. Gav is kind of in charge of it, although one of the people he works with has a lot of experience in event management and does most of the planning. Gav is in charge of the running of the evening and is the master of ceremonies, so the run-up to and night of is kind of stressful for him. It went fantastically though and now he can breathe a big sigh of relief that it is over for another year!
Day Trips
Well, we are still alive here in Yangon. And Myanmar seems to still be avoiding any cases of Corona Virus which is very suspicious, but never mind. Life moves on and we have been doing some interesting exploring around the Yangon area! Continue reading “Day Trips”
The Virus
Well the old coronavirus severity has really ramped up since I was laughing about it on here a few weeks ago. I don’t know what the atmosphere is like in the rest of the world, but here in South East Asia people are starting to take some rather drastic steps to curb its spread. Continue reading “The Virus”
2020
I can’t believe that it is 2020 and that we are nearly at the end of January! Seems crazy to me as it feels like I was just hoping to make it to Thanksgiving and all our holidays and now it’s nearly February. Continue reading “2020”
Turkey Travels
Last March at our big school fundraising gala Gav and I bid with some friends on a three night stay at a fancy resort in the archipelago in southern Myanmar. Actually, for a while we were bidding against each other until we realised the trip was for four people and perhaps we should just work together and stop driving the price up. Oops. We got the trip at a hefty discount and decided that it would be a perfect place to go for Thanksgiving break.
Odds and Ends
Today is Gav’s birthday. When we decided to take these jobs in Myanmar, one thing that he was excited about was the near-assurance of good weather on his birthday. Continue reading “Odds and Ends”
Accidental Homestay
One of the reasons we wanted to take a trip to Laos was that we had read about the Gibbon Experience (way back when we first accepted our jobs) and thought that sounded like an amazing thing to do. Sitting on our couch in London, the thought of sleeping in the world’s tallest treehouses and ziplining along in the jungles of South East Asia seemed very exotic indeed. From the Sublime to the Ridiculous
A few weeks ago I wrote a post about the lovely colonial architecture of downtown Yangon. That is not what we are going to talk about today. Today we are going to get a little tour of the architectural crimes against humanity that are infecting our neighbourhood. Continue reading “From the Sublime to the Ridiculous”
Home Improvement
As we’ve said before, this August and September has been so much more relaxing than last year’s August and September. A good part of this is that by the time we left Yangon in June we had our house pretty much sorted out with all the essentials. Continue reading “Home Improvement”
