One of the reasons we wanted to take a trip to Laos was that we had read about the Gibbon Experience (way back when we first accepted our jobs) and thought that sounded like an amazing thing to do. Sitting on our couch in London, the thought of sleeping in the world’s tallest treehouses and ziplining along in the jungles of South East Asia seemed very exotic indeed. Lounging in Laos
Here we are with our second October break of living abroad and I can hardly believe it’s come round so fast. This time last year we went to Ankor Wat in Cambodia and had a very relaxing time there. This time we planned a trip to Laos (and by we I mean Lindsey).
Retirement Practice (part 3)
Right – Rattlesnakes! Why the fever over rattlesnakes you may ask? You may have also noticed other comments about snakes in past posts. You probably know that I am a birder so why the sudden interest in snakes. Continue reading “Retirement Practice (part 3)”
Retirement Practice (part 2)
Why Retirement Practice? This is my first school summer holiday as a school employee. For years I have had to put up with comments from Lindsey’s colleagues like ‘have a good summer’ and ‘what are your plans for the summer’ etc when my answer has usually been ‘well, more of the same’ as I had a normal job. Continue reading “Retirement Practice (part 2)”
Retirement Practice (part 1)
It’s been a while which for my part has been because we went to Vietnam and I wanted to start that post with a brief history of the Vietnam war. The problem with that plan is that I know embarrassingly little about the Vietnam war (or rather wars as it turns out). Continue reading “Retirement Practice (part 1)”
Cooling off in Kalaw
In Myanmar there is a national holiday called Union Day on February 12th which was a Tuesday this year. Union day is not the day they celebrate kicking out the Brits but the day when the all the regions of the country came together as one country for the first time. Now I have lived in two countries where they celebrate kicking out the Brits. I wonder how many more I will live in. Our school decided to make the Monday a holiday as well thus creating a nice 4 day weekend. We decided to spend the time in Kalaw, which is a small town in the hills about 350 miles north of Yangon and not far from Inle Lake. Continue reading “Cooling off in Kalaw”
Guest Blog – Simon and Paula on tour
For anyone considering heading out to visit Gav and Schubie, buckle up. You’ll know you’re not on a regular route when all the beach bunnies on the flight to Bangkok head off for connecting flights to Ko di Caprio and you join the line for Yangon with an all-local cast of cut-throats. Continue reading “Guest Blog – Simon and Paula on tour”
Burmese Days with S&P
The night we got home from diving we met up with Simon and Paula (Gav’s brother and sister in law) to do a little travelling around Myanmar. Continue reading “Burmese Days with S&P”
Santas with Mantas
This Christmas break was our first big holiday since arriving at the school. A whopping three weeks! For the first part of the time we went to Indonesia scuba diving. Continue reading “Santas with Mantas”
Birding in Burma
This year Thanksgiving coincided with a Burmese national holiday called Tazaungdaing. This meant an extra day of school holiday than normal. We contemplated going to the beach and in retrospect that would probably have been a good choice considering Lindsey’s Dengue Fever but instead decided we would go on a short birding trip to see a bit of the country and for me to see a few birds. Continue reading “Birding in Burma”
